Federal And State Labor Law Postings

To be in compliance with federal and state law, cities need to post information regarding certain personnel laws. These laws require employers to display official postings where employees can readily observe them.

The U.S. Department of Labor provides access to required federal postings in multiple formats through the FirstStep Poster Advisor Program. The program allows users to answer a series of questions to determine which posters are needed or which version is required to achieve full compliance with the law. Required postings at the federal level include:

  • Fair Labor Standards Act
  • Family and Medical Leave Act
  • Equal Employment Opportunity
  • Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act

In addition, whistleblower protection provisions are required to be posted as a result of the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSH Act). Because Iowa has a state plan for OSH Act compliance, the required poster is available through Iowa Workforce Development rather than the federal government. A city may also be required to post certain federal posters depending on the level and type of federal contracts received by a city; this could include a poster outlining the requirements of Davis-Bacon if such provisions are tied to federal funds.

Iowa Workforce Development provides information on both state and federal posters which can be downloaded at the Required Posters Web page. Required postings at the state level include:

  • Unemployment Insurance
  • Safety and Health Protections on the Job
  • Your Rights Under Iowa’s Minimum Wage

A poster detailing the provisions of the Iowa Smoke Free Air Act is also available for workplaces and can be downloaded for free at the state’s Web site.
